The Canvas of Canning

Canning, also known as Port Canning, is a small town situated on the south bank of the gorgeous Matla River. The Sealdah Canning local took an hour to drop us here from Jadavpur.
Canning was named after Lord Canning who wanted to build a new port here. But unfortunately the scheme didn't work out and the town gained the name of an abandoned port.
One fine morning me and Pratap boarded the 5:58 AM Sealdah-Canning local to pay a short trip to Canning. We reached sometime around 7 AM.It was the rainy season. The platform smelled fishy (in a literal sense). There was mud all around. We came out of the Matla Bazaars and walked towards the bridge. This 644 m long bridge joined Canning and Basanti. It was a cloudy morning and weather was just perfect for such an expedition.Canning is also known as the gateway of Sunderban. The nearest watchtower is at a distance of 5 hours by launch.Pratap clicked pictures of the surrounding and I was just enjoying the scenic beauty around us.
The main occupation of the residents is fishing and agriculture.A large amount of fish reach the calcutta market from here.
We crossed the bridge on foot, gathering frames from the nature. After crossing it we came to the banks of Matla. The sound of water splashing on the bank was just too soothing. There were houses along the bank.Little kids were playing in the dust. The town is in the process of development.
It is depressing to leave a riverside without a boat ride. After asking a few residents we got the direction to the Kheya-ghat.It was a long,a bit too long, walk along the muddy road.We slipped quite a few times. Finally we reached the boat. The passengers were mainly fishermen and ladies leaving for their fathers' house. We were in the middle of the river when it started drizzling.Few opened their umbrellas while we chose not to.On the opposite bank new passengers were waiting for the Kheya (boat). They filled it up as soon as the former ones left. The boat started its return trip.More snaps were clicked and we talked about lots of things. After the boatride we walked towards the main road and from there to the station. We had our breakfast in a small hotel near the station.Though we ate fast and run with all our might we couldn't catch the train...the next train was an hour away.We sat down and saw the pictures that he took back there. Some of them are uploaded here.
The journey ended with both of us sleeping in the train.
Special mentions: Thank you Mr Pratap Ch Dey for taking me to this wonderful place and capturing such wonderful photographs.
